BioWho is this Cassandra Cain?
Appearance:
Cassandra is a 19 year old Asian woman with brown eyes and black hair. She is 5'5" and 110 pounds. She is typically dressed all in black with a utility belt.
Canon:Bat-clan/Batgirl
History:
Raised under the tutelege of David Cain, Cassandra was trained since birth to be the ultimate body guard for Ra's al Ghul. Her father, David cain searched for the perfect mother for this child and found and made a deal with Lady Shiva.
In order to become the best martial artist and assassin possible, Cassandra was not taught to speak. Instead, the parts of her brain normally used for speech were trained so she could read other people's movements and body language and predict, with uncanny accuracy, their next move. This also caused her brain to develop learning functions different from most, a form of dyslexia that hampers her ability to read and write.
When she was 8 years old, Cain decided his experiment had progressed far enough for him to test Cassandra's abilities in the real world, and took her to kill a businessman. At the time Cassandra had no idea what she was doing and believed it was only a game. After striking the deathblow, she "read" the target as he died, and saw death as he saw it. "Terror and then... nothing". In addition to scarring her emotionally, she realized murder, like Cain's profession, is wrong, and she ran away from her father.
Ten years later, Cassandra became involved with Barbara Gordon and Batman, eventually becoming the latest Batgirl but other than a few words, did not know how to read, write or speak any kind of language. During one of her patrols, a grateful telepath "rewired" her brain to think with words and understand English at the cost of her ability to predict and read people. Eventually she regained this ability under the training of Lady Shiva which resulted in her own temporary death and then eventually defeating Shiva in combat.
Eventually Cassandra learned that Shiva was possibly her mother and sought her out to confirm this. She found Shiva training the League of Assassins for Nyssa Al Ghul who proclaimed Cassandra "One who is all". In the ensuing confrontation with Cassandra and the League, she was mortally wounded and revived by Shiva in the Lazurus Pit.
After one final battle against Shiva, Cassandra broke her neck and hung her on a hook above the Lazarus pit.
She turned and left vowing never to be Batgirl again.
Unfortunately when she left Al Ghul's hideout? She ended up in Eden.
Abilities:
Cassandra is one of the best martial artists in the DC universe. With her ability to "read" a person's body languague she has been able to predict successfully their moves before they can act making her a formidable opponent. Her ability is so honed that she can even dodge automatic weapons fire at point blank range.
It also allows her to never lose at Rock-Paper-Scissors.
As a team of scientists explained in one of the comics: "Her individual moves are borderline human. It's her aggregate speed that's metahuman. Look -- humans can throw a 100 miles-per-hour fastball, smash concrete blocks with their heads, and run 4.2 forties. What they can't do is all of that at once. It's not so much physical as... as mentally impossible. Too much to coordinate."
As a side effect of Cain's training, Cassandra's brain developed learning functions different from most. Cassandra's brain developed differently, learning body language instead of spoken or written language. Thus, she originally had as much trouble learning spoken and written language as a normal individual would have in learning body language. Although she was able to learn some very basic things ("no," "yes," "me") the same way a normal person can learn to recognize smiles and frowns, it took a telepath rewiring her brain to teach her to speak and understand English. Even then, she only spoke with extreme difficulty (very falteringly, short sentences with long pauses, frequently using the wrong words, etc).
After her battle with Shiva, Cassandra will revert back to her days of mostly not talking.
Equipment:
Cassandra wears a black oufit similar to her costume but without the mask, the bat-insignia or cape. She has a utility belt which contains grappling hooks, batarangs, mini-explosives, tracking devices, a hand-held palm pilot computer, binoculars, plasti-cuffs, and smoke pellets.
